I hope you can come up with some answers, leading me in the right direction on my quest for a new mouthpiece.Conn was sold to MacMillan in 1969, so there is some overlap of the Elkhart brasswind models and their successors from Japan and Abilene, Texas. What mouthpiece would you recommend? I find the 4AY a little bit too large, making my Hirsbrunner a bit stuffier and less responsive compared to when I tried the 6BM. How do I figure out what size receiver my Hirsbrunner has and what shank mouthpiece I should get? I could measure it, of course, but what would the numbers mean? What are the actual sizes of Large, Medium and Small shanks?Ģ. Now I have been searching internet and there I mainly find that Hirsbrunner has Large receivers, but that can't be true, at least not for my horn.ġ. But the thing is, I thought I had a large receiver on my Hirsbrunner, but since the 6BM didn't fit, it must be Medium or Small.

I used to play the Hirsbrunner with a Denis Wick 4AY but now I think I might try a slightly smaller mouthpiece, like a 6BM or maybe something in between. The Hirsbrunner sounded even better (to my ears) than before and was much more responsive than I was used to, so I figured maybe it was not the Couesnon per se I was happy with, but it was the mouthpiece. I could play with it, but it is not how a mouthpiece is supposed to fit into the receiver. I was very surprised to see that it didn't really fit. Then I tried to see what effect the 6BM mouthpiece would have on my Hirsbrunner. Not that the Couesnon sounds bad, but it is a bit stuffier than the Hirsbrunner. Then I noticed the sound of my Hirsbrunner is much more focused than the Couesnon. The next day, at home, I did a comparison between my Hirsbrunner and the Couesnon. Needless to say, I was/am very happy with the new horn. During the rehearsal, I noticed the horn was very responsive and most passages I normally have some difficulty with came out without any trouble. With it came a Denis Wick 6BM mouthpiece. This week, I purchased a second-hand Couesnon "Saxhorn Basse" and took it for a try-out to my Community band rehearsal. I am looking into mouthpieces, but am very confused regarding shank size.
